Another Dimension

24 Feb 2015

If you got a chance to read my last post, you know the insanely long but adventurous road trip we took to get to the place where the pictures you had just seen above were taken. Not only did we get lost in the middle of the Wild Wild West, with no reception or signs of civilization around, but we also didn't make it for the last day tour of this incredible canyon.
So we spent the night at the nearby town called Page and tried our luck again the next morning. And EVERYTHING  was worth the 1.5 hours we got to spend inside this mysterious, awe-inspiring, breathtaking place. I felt like i traveled to another dimension...
We woke up really early to make sure THIS TIME nothing would stop us from visiting the canyon. From my research I also learned that the light entering the canyon is best in the morning, reflecting off the rocks' walls and illuminating different colors adopted through thousands of years of aging.
Our tour was pretty small, only about 8 people, including the guide (thanks to the off peak season). The tours are operated by a small tour company run by the Navajo tribe, and they know everything about the canyons. We walked for about 5 minutes before reaching the entrance to the Lower Canyon, which looked like a thin passageway into the underworld! I am actually a bit claustrophobic and can't stand tight spaces, but I was so excited that all my fears disappeared. As we descended, I couldn't believe what I was seeing!
We chose to tag behind everyone else so as to take our time to appreciate every step and take photographs. I was absolutely blown away by this place, it really felt like a dream. We are so used to seeing the expected in our day to day busy lives: home, work, public transport, traffic, grocery stores, malls, brick buildings, pavements, desks and chairs, the list goes on. The daily "sights" are pretty much the same for the majority of us... We live in small bubbles of stability that, despite our daily stresses, don't really get shaken up much if at all. My bubble really burst inside this canyon. I always knew world wonders existed through millions of photographs and documentaries I have seen on some form of electronic devise, but it was always just eye candy that you eat and never really get satisfied by. Actually being there and experiencing it was transforming on so many different levels.
The canyon has been formed over thousands of years through powerful forces of water and wind, transforming sand into rocks. The canyon's smooth walls actually adopted the shape of moving water caused by yearly flash floods, which makes it easy to imagine the process when you're inside.

Enough of the words. Enjoy the pictures as much as we enjoyed taking them :)
The rock in this photograph has an uncanny resemblance to an Indian Chief. What are the chances, considering the canyon is located in the Navajo Indian Reservation!

You can go on for years where minutes and days and weeks fly by with nothing really significant happening, but if you end up in this place, the feeling of being alive will last a lifetime. When my days are flying, I now have this magnificent canyon to escape to in my memories, where time stops...

I hope the photographs inspired you to visit beautiful Arizona and maybe take a road trip to the Antelope Canyon.
